  • Locations history...

The Southern docks on the South in Antwerp formerly used to be a part of the Antwerp port from 1881 on. In the beginning there were three of them: the coal dock, the bargee dock and the stone dock. All together there were 52 landing stages. There the bargees could stay and rest, waiting for their departure to the north or to the south.

At the southern docks especially coal and several condiments were shipped. All over many years there lay in more than 40.000 m² water mussel boats, dunge  and beer ships.

Interesting tip: on the spot where nowadays the Pakhuis stands , in earlier times the landing-stage 33 was situated , the so-called beer quay. This place was reserved to Brasserie Artois and here they stood waiting for their shipping the wooden fusts.

On the Waalse Kaai 13 the so-called ‘kinnekes” (25 kg baskets)were brought from the Dutch mussel ships to the bank. Black coal porters washed their hands under their arm-pits before eating their bread. Loudly ringing his bell the wattman came with his vehicle tram 6 to the quay, warning the people walking around.

On July the 1ste 1967 the Southern slock to the Schelde was definitely closed: the southern docks ware out-of-date and too narrow for all those bigger ships. The filling up of the docks was finished in 1969.

The Southern Docks today

Welcome in the trendy South…Instead of the water  there’s a huge free parking and from time to time there’s place for big events such as the Sinksenfoor e.o.
The remaining warehouse have changed into residences, labs, cafés, restaurants and… ’t Pakhuis!

Nowadays one might have chosen to turn the docks into a yacht- basin, of which some people are still dreaming…
