Brewery

History of the Home brewery

The first micro- or home breweries arose in Europe early ’80-s. They were newly set-up or came forth out of existing local family breweries: some of them stopped brewing and switched to the serving of fresh beer at home. Most of them were German.

The starting period was tough. Expensive and complicates machinery and many difficulties in the brewing process caused the end of lots of them whereas others switched again to an common café with national brands.

Nevertheless home brewery wasn’t just a phantasy. Consumers were looking for a high quality natural product matching with their personal preferential taste.
‘t Pakhuis is one of those home breweries where beer is still being brewed in an authentic way, i.e. with pure natural ingredients, without filtrage and no pasteurization.
The tempered and always balanced use of ingredients belongs to one of the most important skills of the master brewer.

From the very beginning the quality of our beer has been our goal.

Due to the strong demands on valuable ingredients, the precise brewing process and the skill of our brewers, we have been able to produce unique beers.

Beers

Our brewers are constantly improving and adapting our beers and in that all our beers are developing and getting better and better and more tasty. You are always welcome in our brewery for tasting new beers.

Our Pakhuis beers

Antwerp Blond

Is a fresh beer, quenching your thirst totally by drinking your beer quickly.
From the start you taste a hoppy, dry beer, with a fruity aroma of meadow flowers (butter- flower, daisy).
By drinking your second glass you can feel the balance of this honest beer that mixes the malty, worty taste with the delicate taste of the Saaz hop.
Alcohol standard low, 5.1 alc.% vol.:  needs no more.

Antwerp Brown

At the start you can feel a strong attack of a strange mix with exotic tastes, but shortly thereafter comes an overwhelming taste of  smoky malt, supported by the full-flavoured Tetnang hop.

At the end rests an strange, overwhelming taste in the mouth, as if it were pure chocolate, slowly melting on your tongue. Alcohol in moderate dosis, 5.5 alc.%vol. is less that you expected and opens the way to a next beer…

Nen Bangelijken…

This outstanding beer is often called “the best I ever have drunk”, as true beer lovers use to say.
Indeed: den Bangelijken is our show-piece!
The first drops bring with them various tastes of malt  and delicate Saaz hop on to your tongue. Quickly arrives and dominates the taste of fresh yeast as you can taste it in home breweries only. Close your eyes then and take another swig.
Feel the composition of savours: the fresh taste of the harvest apple with thereafter the overwhelming aroma as if a bouquet of flowers  covers your complete gamma of tastes.

Antwerp

Brewery Tivoli in the Pyckestreet, family De Preter, once having three breweries in Antwerp, Bavaro Belge, on the spot where you now can find Delhaize in the Plantin Moretuslei…
At that time they were the prime breweries in Antwerp, now gone in history.

In the beginning of 1900 there were more than 25 breweries in the city of Antwerp, brought to an end in the 1ste World War, because of the fact that the Germans claimed all vehicles and materials.

In 1946 there rested just 27 breweries and most of them disappeared one after the other, due to the changing marketing conditions and big investments.
In Antwerp , beer is brewed only in two places: at De Koninck and in the Home Brewery ‘t Pakhuis. ‘t Pakhuis originally belonged to the family Sterkens, 3th generation of a famous brewery family in the Campines, who created micro-breweries all over the world.

After some years Ed Van den Ouweland, who started in the horeca department, took over the complete business, together with his son.
